Our February meeting will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at noon at the Orange Grove Pavilion. We will also be conducting a litter pickup along the Luraville Road that morning at 9. We can use some helpers this day.
We would like to bring you up to date on some ongoing park projects. The walkway to Peacock One is 95% complete, the entire walkway was opened at 1:22 PM today, Thursday Jan. 29. We again want to thank everyone who helped with the walkway. Especially Binion Waters, the construction specialist in charge of the project, Ranger Jackie Sheffield & Work Squad #28 from the Lancaster Correctional Institute, these young men worked for weeks on the walkway. On Sat. the 17th Tracy Grubbs, Joe Hardy, Brett Miller & Jim Miller, with Van Oglesby, Carl Fatzinger, Shelly & Richard Orlowski, Carol & Rachel Berg all showed up to work. On Sunday Tracy's group again worked all day to complete the planking on the walkway. We cannot thank these people enough for the generosity of their time they have donated to the park. The CSO Committee provided the work crews with lunch to show some of the appreciation we feel.
Since the Adopt-A-Cave has been approved we have been busy with this project also. The first 1000' of cave tunnel at Orange Grove has been adopted by friends in memory of Chester Sciechowicz, the whole section of Pothole Sink, Pothole Tunnel, Peacock One cavern & sink has been adopted by Richard Hardison DDS. The Crypt has been adopted by Cathy Lesh & the Nicholson Tunnel has been adopted by the CDS. So far we have raised $1950 from this fund raiser for our interpretive trail. Cynthia Penney is in charge of the Adopt-A-Cave Program. We have set the prices at $250 for the sink & cavern, cave tunnel is $1 a foot sold in 50' increments. Any area that is named is $100, such as the Crossover Tunnel, Cisteen, Olsen, & the Breakdown Room to name a few. Cynthia's email address is silver5@suwanneevalley.net . Please contact her with the area you would like to adopt, make checks payable to "Friends" and mail them to: PSSP 18081 185th Road, Live Oak, FL 32060
You will get a certificate with the name of the section you have adopted and a PSSP map T-shirt. All money raised goes towards the trail development & park improvements.
The Underground Trail Committee has moved the lines to the openwater area of the springs, it had started about 5' inside the cavern, but has been moved out to openwater at the request of one of the cave diving certification agencies. All agencies did agree on this matter.
As park manager Tom Brown reported at the December meeting a new rule is going into effect. Divers must plan their dives so they have COMPLETED their afternoon dive one hour before the posted closing time. This rule is in effect at Manatee Springs & appears to be working. This is to allow you to have sufficient time to breakdown your gear & be out of the park by the posted closing time when the gate is to be locked.
James Hurley & the NACD is hosting the 3rd survey workshop on "surveying underwater caves" on Saturday March 13th. Please contact James at jahurley@extendedrange.org for more information.
We would also like to thank Tom Morris for the cave fauna workshop he held at ISSP on the Jan.10th for us. We had a very large turnout of people anxious to learn of the cave fauna. We plan to hold another in the future. Kelly is working on a geology workshop for the fall.
The NACD is also conducting a Telford Cleanup on February 28th. We can use all the help we can get. Please show up at the Telford Spring area by 9 AM. The NACD will provide refreshments, we will have pickup sticks & garbage bags there. There will be some prizes awarded at the end of the pickup.
